We know that every motorist has their own unique driving style, so we recommend that when you buy a new tyre for your vehicle that you consider how it performs in the following criteria:

  • Wet and dry grip
  • Handling
  • Durability
  • Road noise
  • Performance in various weather conditions

Why you should check your tyre pressure regularly

Correct tyre pressure is vital to your safety on the road. An under-inflated tyre can affect handling and grip, potentially causing your car to drive in an unpredictable manner.

Low tyre pressure can have a negative impact on your car. Some of the effects can be longer braking distance on wet surface, weaker resistance to aquaplaning, bad handling over- and under steering, more difficult parking with your car (harder movement due to larger rolling resistance), risk of sudden tyre brake while driving, faster wear, irregular and increased wear.

Likewise, too high tyre pressure may cause worse grip, may also lower driving comfort (lower bump absorption, higher noise level inside the car), faster wear of the car suspensions elements (due to lower bump absorption), more use of the central part of the tyre tread and higher tyre damage possibility which can result from falling into a pothole or hitting the curb.

By keeping your tyres at their optimum pressure, your running costs are also reduced. Under-inflated tyres require a bigger force to make them turn, so your car uses more fuel. Additionally, tyres which are not set to their correct pressure wear out more quickly.

So, to benefit from lower fuel bills, longer tyre life, increased safety and reduced CO2 emissions, make sure you check your tyre pressures at least once a month and before a long journey.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) were introduced to improve road safety by letting a driver know when their car is running on incorrectly inflated tyres. However, figures from the UK’s MoT test – the equivalent of the NCT in Ireland – suggest that many drivers are choosing to ignore the warning systems, and continue to drive on dangerously under-inflated or damaged tyres.

While TPMS helps to reduce the number of tyre-related incidents, drivers should also carry out regular visual checks on their tyres on a monthly basis and before long.

If you need new tyres or aren’t sure if you do, why not drop into one of our branches around Dublin and one of our staff will check your tyres for free and advise you should you need new tyres.

GOODYEAR TYRES

DUNLOP TYRES

When you choose Goodyear tyres, you’re rolling with a long history of innovation and award winning quality.

Drive with a tyre that’s made to feel good.

Geneva International Motor Show 2017, The Future Tyre by Goodyear – It’s a Sphere

Goodyear unveiled its latest concept tyre, Eagle-360, at the Geneva International Motor Show. The spherical, 3-D printed tyre highlights Goodyear’s vision for the future and presents an inspiring solution for the long-term future when autonomous driving is expected to be more mainstream.

According to a recent study, 85 million autonomous-capable vehicles are expected to be sold annually around the world by 2035.

Goodyear recommended in 80% of magazine tests.

Summer, Winter and All-Season tyres aren’t just highly rated, they’re also highly recommended.

In over 80% of independent European tyre tests over the past 5 years, our winter summer and all-season tyres were recommended for everything from grip to braking. That’s because Goodyear’s engineers test each new tyre design against more than 50 performance criteria. To ensure each Goodyear tyre lead to better driving experiences.

Winter driving tips from Goodyear Tyres

Driving in snow, slush and ice brings its own problems. Here are a few tips to consider:

Keep your speed down

You shouldn’t exceed the maximum speed that your vehicle recommends for winter tyres – it’s often lower than that of summer tyres.

Check the tyres for wear

Check your tyre pressure and tread depth regularly. Goodyear recommends a minimum tread depth of 4mm for winter tyres to ensure optimal performance, but in colder countries where using winter tyres is mandatory, tread depth will be specified by law.

Use a higher gear to start and pull away

Spinning your wheels can dig the vehicle deeper into the snow.

Don’t ‘pump’ your brakes

If you have anti-lock brakes, keep a steady pressure on the brake pedal instead.

Keep your distance

Braking distances increase in snow and icy conditions.

Be careful over bridges or passes

They are well known locations for icy patches, so lift your foot slightly off the accelerator when going over them.

Don’t overdo the accelerator if stuck in snow

There’s a danger you’ll just end up deeper in a hole. Use the lowest possible gear and rock the tyres back and forth until you’ve got enough forward motion to push yourself forward.

Avoid distractions

You’ll need all the concentration you can muster in heavy snowy conditions. Don’t take calls or do anything else that could distract you.

Today Dunlop tyres are factory-fitted as original equipment to an impressive array of cars. These include the Mercedes-Benz SLK, Audi TT, BMW 5 Series and Porsche 911 Carrera. The company also works closely in product development partnerships with AMG. Though the company is much associated with all forms of motorsport, it makes a range of tyres to suit all vehicle types.

The Dunlop Sport BluResponse was launched a couple of years ago. It offers a 30% fuel efficiency saving compared to the tyre it replaced, the FastResponse. Its scores on EU tyre labelling tests mean it compares very favourably with many other tyres on both wet grip and fuel efficiency, Indeed, it is recommended as a ‘best buy’ in many independent tests. It is not surprising, therefore, that its combination of performance and safety make this a popular tyre choice for many fleet managers and drivers of medium-size cars.

The SportMaxx range is suitable for high-performance and sports cars. It is fitted as original equipment to many Mercedes-Benz, Skoda, Jaguar and Audi models. These tyres offer exceptional grip in all weathers. Many of them are designed using Dunlop Touch Technology, a set of features designed to offer drivers a more responsive drive. The run-flat versions of these tyres have proved particularly popular.

For smaller and city cars, Dunlop offers the StreetResponse tyre. This range is designed for superior dry handling, fuel efficiency and wet braking. An innovative rubber compound technology means that these hard-wearing tyres retain their flexibility and are particularly suited to the stop-start nature of city driving.

BRIDGESTONE TYRES

As a seventeen year old, Shojiro Ishibashi took over his family clothing business in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1906. Shojiro’s ambitious dream was to dedicate his life to contributing to the nation of Japan above and beyond the work of his family business. His list of accomplishments is impressive: including: specialization in tabi Japanese traditional socks, reform of the apprentice system, use of a standardized pricing system, creation of Jika-tabi (socks with rubber soles used as work shoes), development of the rubber shoe business and overseas production. Using the capital accumulated from Jika-tabi and the rubber shoe business, Shojiro decided to make tyres, which was an industry that didn’t exist in Japan at that time. He believed in the future of motorized transportation in Japan, and he was adamant about producing tyres domestically.

Twitch Fix have had a long relationship with Bridgestone, Although not as far back as the 1930’s.

Check out below some of the Bridgestone tyres now available at Twitch Fix  in Dublin, they have come along way since the development of socks with rubber soles.

TYRE MAINTENANCE

Computerized Wheel Balance

Tyre Maintenance, Balancing your wheels helps prevent uneven tyre wear and minimizes wheel vibration. Balancing is performed anytime you put new tyres on your car and should be performed every 6,000 miles or as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.

An unbalanced tyre can cause premature wear of the tyre, strut and shock, wheel vibration, poor handling, and excessive noise. Unbalanced tyres also cause reduced mileage expectancy. Have your tyres balance checked at your any of our locations throughout Dublin if you notice any of these symptoms.

A wheel balance consists of small weights placed around the wheel to help balance the tyre and wheel assembly, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride.

Tyre Rotation

Rotating the position of each tyre helps equalize tread wear, helping to maximize the life of your tyres. Front tyres tend to wear faster than rear tyres on front wheel drive vehicles due to added pressure/resistance from steering. If your tyres aren’t rotated regularly, they may need to be replaced prematurely. Rotating the position of each tyre helps equalize tread wear to help maximize the life of your tyres.

Plan to have your tyres rotated every 6,000 miles, this service is free at Twitch Fix after purchasing tyres.

Tyre Repair

Properly repairing a tyre that has deflated or is losing air or has picked up a nail, screw or sharp object is critical. Some tyres may be repaired if they continually loose air or have a puncture in the tread area. Whenever you have a tyre issue, be sure to have it inspected to determine whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

Tyre repairs need to be performed correctly in accordance with strict industry standards. Before any repair, a service professional must properly inspect the tyre by removing it from the wheel and inspect the outside and inside to determine the extent of the damage and to determine if the tyre can be repaired.

When a tyre can be repaired, your local Auto Autoservice branch performs a complete repair by using a tyre repair patch. Once completed, the technicians will re-balance the tyre and rim assembly and reset the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), if applicable.

Correct Tyre Maintenance will help the lifetime of your tyres.

TYRE LABELLING

Performance Labelling

A new EC regulation requires some tyres to have performance labels, with the aim of encouraging people to purchase tyres with superior environmental and safety performance, and also encourage tyre manufacturers to produce tyres whose performance exceeds the minimum requirements specified in EU Regulations.

This regulation requires that tyres manufactured from 1st July 2012 for cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks and placed on sale from 1st November 2012, carry a label showing the tyre’s wet grip, fuel efficiency and noise performance. The tyre labels are similar to the labelling already in use for household goods such as washing machines and dishwashers. Each tyre will be given a performance rating from A-G excluding D to avoid an average performing tyre.

EU Tyre Label

Some tyres, such as retreaded tyres, off-road tyres and racing tyres, are excluded from tyre labelling requirements.

Wet Grip

Wet adherence, or grip, is one of the most important safety performance characteristics of a tyre. However, higher adherence and lower rolling resistance are often contradictory objectives that have traditionally required a performance trade-off. Thanks to the new tyre labelling regulation, customers will be able to see and choose for themselves their preferred performances.

Vehicles with tyres from Class A stop in the shortest distance from 50mph, whilst tyres from Class B take an additional 3-6 metres. This trend continues for the subsequent values and results in an increase in braking distance of over 18 metres from a vehicle in Class A to Class F. It is key that this crucial safety value appears on the label to enable the motorist to have a fuller picture of the tyres performance. A label that only highlighted rolling resistance and noise could give a false impression of the tyres performance. For wet braking Categories D and G are not used so any tyre with longer stopping distances in the wet will be rated as E or F.

Fuel Efficiency

One of the forces influencing the fuel efficiency of a motorised vehicle is the rolling resistance of the tyres.  A tyre from Class C will use 1 litre more fuel than that of a tyre from Class B over a journey of 625 miles.

Exterior Noise

Traffic noise is an environmental concern. The new labels split tyres into three sound categories, based on the noise they produce in reference to new EU regulations, to be introduced in 2016.

1 black sound wave = least noise produced, already compliant with the future tighter EU limit
2 black sound waves
= already compliant with the future EU limit.
3 black sound waves
= compliant with the current EU limit.

E-Markings on tyres

What is an E-marked tyre?

An E-mark confirms that a tyre meets minimum EU or International (UNECE) standards in relation to its dimensions, load and speed rating. E-mark tyres have been tested to ensure adequate tread depth and performance ability.

All motor vehicles tyres in the EU must be E-marked, whether new or retreaded.

Here’s how to read your tyre in relation to E-marks:

  • The E-mark consists of an ‘E’ or ‘e’ and a number within a circle or a rectangle
  • A capital ‘E’ denotes UNECE approval, a small ‘e’ EU approval. Either is acceptable.
  • The number following the ‘E’ or ‘e’ denotes the Member State that granted approval.
  • Following the circle or rectangle is a type approval certificate number, issued for tyre size and type.

Road worthiness check of E-marked tyres
The check on E-marking of tyres is one of a number of new NCT test items introduced following the completion of a public consultation process in 2009.

What should I do if I have recently purchased tyres that are not E-marked?
It is illegal to fit non-E-marked tyres.
If you have recently had tyres fitted to your vehicle that do not have an E-mark, the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) advises you return to the vendor with proof of purchase and request that they be replaced with the E-marked tyres appropriate for your vehicle.
When returning non E-marked tyres, the
National Consumer Agency advises that you also consult the information provided on their website on the Sale of Goods Acts 1980 (PDF).

S-marking on tyres

EU motor vehicle tyres must bear an S-mark “sound marking” that certifies that the amount of road noise produced by the tyre complies with EU or International (UNECE) standards.
Retailers can no longer sell tyres with a width of 215mm or lower unless they have an S-marking on the sidewall.
From 1st October 2011, all tyres, regardless of width, will have to bear an S-mark to be sold.

SECOND HAND PART WORN TYRES

The safety of a tyre is directly related to how long it has been used for. So if you’re thinking of buying second hand part worn tyres, remember what they could cost you.

In its latest campaign the RSA has highlighted the cost and potential danger of buying second hand (part-worn) tyres. Second hand part worn tyres are tyres which have been used on another vehicle. Such tyres can pose a serious road safety risk. The history of a second hand part worn tyres is relatively unknown – it could have been involved in a crash or have internal damage, which may not be visible once fitted to your vehicle. Even if these tyres meet the minimum thread depth requirements, they may not uphold in an emergency braking or steering situation.

Second hand part worn tyres – are they as cheap as you think?

Make sure you know what your legal requirements are before considering second hand part worn tyres. It is an offence to drive with defective or worn tyres and you risk a fine of €80 and up to 4 penalty points upon conviction.

You should also think about whether or not you’re getting real value for money. For example; a second hand part worn tyre costing €30 has tread thickness of 3.6mm. Therefore, it has 2 mm of useable tread before it reaches the minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm. This works outs at €15 per mm of usable tread.

On the other hand, a new tyre costing €80 has 8mm of tread. Therefore, it has 6.4 mm of useable tread before it reaches the minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm. This works out at €12.50 per mm of useable tread, and therefore offers better value. In addition to the increased costs in this example, you would have to buy and fit three sets of these part worn tyres in order to get the same life as one new set of tyres.
The following are some important safety points to look out for if you’re considering buying a second hand part worn tyres:

Check for an E-Mark on the tyre. Your tyres will need to carry an E-mark for the NCT.

Ask the seller if the tyre has undergone a condition check (including when it is inflated) to make sure it meets the minimum legal requirements and is free from defects both internally and externally. Common defects include tears, lumps and bulges. A tyre that is not roadworthy will result in a car failing its NCT as well as reducing your safety on the road. Examples of particular tyre defects are shown below.

Ask the seller to confirm that the tyre you are buying is the correct size and design for your vehicle, and that it has the correct load and speed rating for its intended use. If you’re not sure about what tyre is best suited for your vehicle, you could consult your vehicle manufacturer or look it up in the owner’s handbook.

Find out the age of the second hand part worn tyre and make sure that it is not more than six years old. A tyre that is six years old is a ‘pass advisory’ item at the NCT. A tyre’s age can be determined by the serial number on the tyre sidewall. This serial number comprises of a four digit code as shown in Figure 6 and refers to the tyre’s date of manufacture. The last two digits refer to the year or manufacture; the first two refer to the week in that year. For example, 1411 = week 14 of 2011.

Tyres deteriorate with age. Signs of tyre aging include cracking or crazing (lots of fine cracks) on the side wall of the tyre caused by the tyre’s flexing movements. The shape of the tyre tread can become distorted too. Tyre aging increases the risk of tyre failure. Tyres may begin to show the signs of aging from when they are six years old.

Be aware that there could be damage to the inside of the rubber which you mightn’t be able see from just looking at it, but that it would be possible to see in an x-ray. The seller might be able to show that the tyre was x-rayed to prove that there is no internal damage.
